Since 2000 II Architects int work in the field of “Earthquake Architecture”.
In their Research and Development at University they search for positive architectural and structural interventions to design earthquake resistant buildings. In this sense they consult clients, authorities and building contractors.

The Prototype

The devastating earthquake in Izmit-Turkey in 1999 was the turning point and the beginning of the development of a structural Prototype for five story-housing. After the earthquake most of these building types built in a reinforced concrete structure infilled with masonry were damaged or even fallen down.

The Prototype is a good solution and alternative to this conventional structure. The new structure is a combined steel and timber frame construction and follows the principle of “weak beams - strong columns”. The whole framework is designed as a modular system, reducing the costs and accelerating the mounting of the members.
The structural joints are specially designed to fit this construction.

A real physical model (scale 1:20) was tested with different dual bracing systems on a shaking table. The various tests were monitored through the technicians of the Arsenal Research, Vienna and prove the earthquake resistance of the designed Prototype.

Advantage

- Mass reduction;
- Ductility ;
- Modular structure
- Low cost

Architecture

Similar to the modular structure the architecture is developed in a modular system providing the biggest freedom in the development of the single housing units.
According to the client and his needs the area and the shape of the unit can vary from a big loft to a delicate small and cosy unit. The stories can therefore host between 1 to 3 units.

Furthermore the cantilevering beam system of the floor slab offer various shaping of the façade. The integration of balconies or oriel windows and a curtain wall façade is possible with this system.
